Project Goal
Design a mobile app that empowers users to confidently explore their personal style, plan outfits, shop smart, and learn about fashion all within a single, intuitive platform. By incorporating AI-powered feedback and gamification, our goal was to turn shopping and outfit planning into a fun, educational, and inclusive experience.

Original Solutions
As a team, we wanted Mystyle to go beyond the typical fashion app. Our goal was to create a smart, fun, and educational space where users could not only find their style but also learn. Here are the key features we envisioned.

Educational Tools
We wanted to include a feature that helps users learn about fashion, not just follow it. The educational component would guide users through different style categories, help them understand how to build outfits, and give them insights into sustainable choices. The goal was to create an all-in-one space where users could access everything they need without jumping between Google searches or multiple apps.

AI Integration
We saw AI as a huge opportunity to make the app more intuitive and responsive. From answering user questions to recommending outfits, AI would be a key part of making Mystyle feel like a personal stylist in your pocket. Users could ask for help narrowing down clothing options, get styling advice, or find specific items anytime they needed. We were really ambitious about the possibilities and excited to explore just how far we could take this technology.

Gamification
To keep things fun and engaging, we explored adding gamification into the app. This would be in the form of mini games, challenges, and rewards that make the learning process enjoyable. Whether it’s unlocking new style tips or earning badges for completing activities, this feature would keep users coming back while encouraging them to discover more about their personal style in an engaging way.

Research Process

Group Brainstorming
To better understand the space we were designing for, we did a competitive analysis. We reviewed similar apps and platforms to see what features they offered, what their UI/UX looked like, and how well they solved user problems. From this, we were also able to spot a few gaps in the market that gave us ideas for how Mystyle could stand out.
Ideation & Idea Sorting
Following the brainstorming phase, we transitioned into ideation. During this stage, we grouped similar ideas, identified patterns, and filtered out less feasible concepts. This helped us focus on the most impactful problems and potential solutions to guide our next steps.
Secondary Research
Next, we dug deeper into the issues we all had in common. We looked online for relevant articles, stats, or insights that could help us learn more. Through this, we found some interesting info about things like social anxiety around fashion, the impact of fast fashion, why dressing well matters, and how sustainability plays a role in personal style.

To better understand the space we were designing for, we did a competitive analysis. Audience Research
To better understand our users, we created an online survey and gathered around 70 responses from people in our target age groups: 19–30 and 40–50. This gave us a solid mix of perspectives to help test our ideas and back up our assumptions.
From our research, we identified three main challenges people face when it comes to finding their personal style:

Other Solutions
While brainstorming features, we also came up with a few key ideas that would help set Mystyle apart and create a more personalized, inclusive, and user-friendly experience.
Inclusive Filters
We put a lot of thought into how users search for clothes. We wanted to go beyond the basics, so we wanted to include filters for not just size, color, and price but also for things like event type, and inclusive fashion needs. Whether someone’s dressing for a wedding, looking for modest wear, or trying to find the perfect fit for their body type, these filters make the search faster, easier, and more personalized.
Unique Layout
During our competitive research, we noticed that a lot of fashion apps had very similar UI layouts—they felt repetitive and didn’t offer much in terms of innovation. We wanted to break away from that and design something fresh. Our goal was to keep things simple but modern, so we focused on a clean layout with an easy swipe feature that lets users scroll through clothing items effortlessly. We also made sure to follow accessibility best practices—especially when it came to color contrast and readability—so everyone, regardless of ability, could enjoy using the app.
User-Friendly UI & Virtual Stylist
We wanted Mystyle to feel easy, familiar, and fun to use. The swiping feature similar to apps like Tinder makes it quick to like or pass on clothing items, keeping the experience simple and engaging.
To support users even more, we introduced a Virtual Stylist powered by AI. It can suggest outfits based on your style and needs, for example, helping you dress for a job interview. Based on survey feedback about AI concerns, we made sure this feature feels optional and non-intrusive. It's there when you need it, but won’t get in the way.

End Result
Creating Mystyle came with its challenges, but the process from an idea to a working prototype taught us so much. We gained hands-on experience in user research, brand development, and building through iteration.
User feedback played a huge role in shaping the app, helping us better understand what our audience wanted. Our competitive analysis also revealed key gaps in the market, which we used to guide our UI/UX decisions and create a more thoughtful, user-first design.

Overall, this project was a great learning experience for the whole team, and we’re proud of how far Mystyle has come. Thanks for checking out our case study from all of us on the Mystyle team, thank you!
